The Infographic Journey of Stefan Kanchev

Overview:

In crafting my infographic dedicated to the esteemed Bulgarian graphic designer Stefan Kanchev, I embarked on a journey to encapsulate his remarkable legacy while honoring the era that defined his work. This project was created for a university design class, where the assignment was to encapsulate Kanchev’s iconic style and influence within a modern visual presentation.

Concept:

The project showcases a diverse range of Kanchev's work, from advertising posters to postal stamps, all unified by his distinctive approach. Central to the piece is an infographic-style layout that highlights his major achievements and design elements. Inspired by the Soviet Union propaganda prevalent during Kanchev's time, I chose a palette of beige and red, accented by brown for contrast. These colors evoke the nostalgia of his era and pay homage to his creative milieu. Additionally, a touch of green was added to represent Kanchev's Bulgarian roots, echoing the colors of the national flag.

Process of Creating

1. Research and Sketching:

· I Studied Stefan Kanchev’s portfolio extensively, focusing on his use of geometric shapes and bold colors.

· Sketched initial concepts to explore how best to represent his diverse body of work cohesively.

2. Color and Effects:

· Applied a cohesive palette of beige, red, brown, and green to evoke the era and honor Kanchev's Bulgarian heritage.

· Used layering and blending techniques to create a harmonious and visually appealing layout.

3. Layout Design:

· Made the layout to resemble a postal mark, reflecting Kanchev’s significant contributions to postal stamp design. This design choice adds a unique and relevant touch to the overall presentation, reinforcing the theme of Kanchev's work.

4. Typography:

· Selected fonts that reflect the mid-20th-century aesthetic, aligning with Kanchev’s era and style.

· Carefully positioned text elements to ensure balance and readability within the design.

Outcome:

· The final design is a vibrant and engaging tribute to Stefan Kanchev, encapsulating his impact on graphic design. This project enhanced my understanding of Kanchev’s design principles and allowed me to develop my digital illustration and layout skills.
